Leyburn celebrates festive season

The past week has seen the Christmas spirit being shared in the Leyburn community.

On Saturday, the Men’s Shed invited members and a few locals to come together with a barbecue Christmas lunch at the opening of the Alan Richards Memorial picnic shelter area.

Alan was a founding member of the Men’s Shedin Leyburn, so in recent
months members put their skills together to build this rustic country style shelter in the sports/camping area for the public to honour his memory.

Sunday was a huge day for the Leyburn RSL Sub Branch with its traditional community lunch.

A Christmas banquet of prawns ham, turkey, salads and desserts was attended
by over 70 locals and service members.

President Mark Ryan spoke on all the positive achievements from the past year and looking forward to 2023 being even bigger following success in recent grant applications.

Mark thanked all who gave their time and support to making the past year a success before he called on the annual volunteers award winner for 2022.

This year’s vote went to Sheryle Wieden, who accepted her gift and flowers from last year’s winner Graham Campbell.

Tuesday saw the last monthly meeting of the QCWA and looking back to 12 months ago, when the branch only had 8 members, to now celebrating this Christmas with 16 members was a big achievement.

The positive new generation of members is excited about the new year with more regular community events to keep this small village of ladies busy.

After their meeting, all members brought a lunch platter to share around the Christmas table in the well air-conditioned hall that over recent years has had some wonderful improvements.
