A local bus stop at the Oakey Railway Station is receiving a much-needed upgrade.

The work is being undertaken in order to ensure that bus stops are at the same level as bus entrances for the purpose of standardising bus accessibility.

Oakey is the last in a series of towns across the Toowoomba Region to receive such an upgrade, which will service Greyhound bus services to Toowoomba and Brisbane.

TRC said that the upgrades were needed to ensure disability compliance standards were met.

“The Queensland Government requires all TransLink bus stops within our Region to comply with current Disability Standards for Accessible public transport,” a statement read.

The Council said $100,000 has been allocated in the 2022/23 budget to renew bus stops in our Region.

“The State Government has provided funding to us under the Passenger Transport Accessible Infrastructure Program (PTIAP) funding scheme to support the upgrade of bus stop infrastructure.”

Ten bus stops were programmed to be constructed in 2022/23 across Toowoomba and regional areas.

It’s understood most of these bus stop upgrades have now been fully completed.

Bus services are an issue of frustration for many locals in Oakey, with irregular services being a common complaint.

The upgrade has raised hopes of an increased focus in public transport services for Oakey and other local centres such as Kingsthorpe and Goombungee.
