Recognising the sacrifice of Vietnam Veterans

Rotary-wing Aircraft Maintenance School Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Trent Groves was guest speaker at the Oakey RSL Sub-Branch’s Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Service on Wednesday with the community gathering at the local war memorial to reflect on and honour the sacrifice of servicemen and women.

Lt. Col. Groves paid respect to the 521 young Australians who were killed as well as the thousands wounded in the nation’s almost ten year military involvement the Vietnam War.

“Words alone cannot repay their sacrifice, but our actions potentially can because it is their sacrifice that enables us to be here today,” he said.

“It is days like [Vietnam Veteran’s Day] that we can personally gather and remember them.”

Oakey residents and representatives from local groups placed wreaths at the base of the war memorial, the Oakey RSL Sub-Branch president led a reading of The Ode and Daniel Handley MG read the names of fallen local soldiers.
