Matthew Denny an Allora favourite

For the first time in the district’s long history, Allora has an Olympian and when Matthew Denny returned to his home town on Friday (10th September), the welcome was huge.

From the rear of his uncle Bob’s convertible sedan, Matthew Denny was able to take in the enormity of the welcome afforded him by the people of Allora.

Students from Allora P-10 State School, St. Patrick’s Catholic School, Pilton State School and Toowoomba Grammar joined with hundreds of current and past local residents and gave an enthusiastic welcome to Denny as he was driven through the centre of town.

At the Allora Regional Sports Museum, he was presented with special certificates by Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi and the president of Sports Darling Downs Mick Smith.

Matthew Denny became emotional as he responded to the welcome.

“I honestly can’t believe this parade, the best wishes, the hugs, the handshakes and just the support in general has been overwhelming,” he said.

Denny told the crowd he was proud to be from Allora.

He offered his thanks to everyone who had helped him on his Olympic journey and made special mention of family members who had an obvious impact on his sporting career.

“To know that I am the only Olympian from Allora makes me so proud and
I hope that from my story I can inspire others to take the first step towards becoming an Olympian,” Denny said as he encouraged to the younger members of the crowd to follow their dream.
