2024 Oakey Rodeo called off

The 2024 Oakey Rodeo has been called off due to rising costs, the Oakey Show Society has announced.

The return of the Oakey Rodeo in 2023 drew a crowd of over a thousand.
The return of the Oakey Rodeo in 2023 drew a crowd of over a thousand.

Show Society President Judy Byers said the committee had made the decision with reluctance.

“It was not an easy decision however the rising costs of running an event like the Rodeo forced the decision,” she said.

“Insurance to cover such an event is considerable and we have to hire the Rodeo chutes as well as stock, when you balance the total expenses against the net income there is not a great difference.

“We will review this decision in the next twelve months prior to our planning for 2025 events.”

It’s a major blow to the event which has been a part of town life for several decades.

Oakey rodeo-goers will have to travel to the Goombungee-Haden Rodeo for their fix, that one being staged this Saturday (13th January).

Gates open at midday, and the rodeo action starts at 3pm with a party on till late with an allocated drinking zone inside.

No dogs or alcohol are allowed to be brought in.

The other rodeo in the district is at Brymaroo, which traditionally hosts its event on Easter Saturday.
