2024 return of Clifton’s Beautiful Historic Homes

The Clifton Courier’s feature articles on the historic homes of Clifton in 2023 proved to be popular with readers and so the Courier will again run a similar series of articles but this year we intend to look beyond just Clifton.

Just as the town of Clifton is blessed with many beautiful historic homes so too do the surrounding towns of Nobby, Allora, Leyburn, Greenmount and Cambooya.

Therefore it seems only fair to include homes from these pioneer towns in our 2024 series of articles.

Clifton Courier readers who may be less familiar with homes from surrounding towns will no doubt be interested to read the history behind these homes and the people who have lived there in the past and the current home owners.

However, rural home-steads scattered throughout the district are less likely to be known by readers and we would dearly like to include these rural homes.

Many rural homesteads were built during the days when “Australia rode on the sheep’s back” and so are an important part of the history of the Darling Downs.

We invite homeowners from our district who are interested to have their home featured to contact the Clifton Courier to arrange a suitable time for a meeting and photo opportunities.

Any home built  before World War II is suitable and not only large Federation, Victorian or traditional Queenslander style homes but small workers cottages as they too have a story to tell.

Many of the homes featured last year had either undergone restoration or were in the process of restoration or soon to be restored.

The trials and tribulations of the restoration process was also an interesting part of the home’s history as people searched for historically appropriate building materials and fittings.

The length that some owners went to in finding just the right verandah balustrade or light fitting is testament to the dedication that many owners had in making sure their restoration was faithful to the original design.

It is important that the unique history of the Darling Downs is kept alive and the homes built by the district’s pioneers and their descendants are a critical part of that story.
