Eighty-three new nurses will begin offering care in Toowoomba this month, as part of Darling Downs Health’s Early Career Pathway Program.

The intake – made up by a diverse group of women and men – will play a critical role in delivering care to patients and supporting Toowoomba Hospital’s clinical teams over the next year.

Four separate nursing cohorts will begin each week this month. All 83 nurses will be recruited permanently.

Among the group is Toowoomba local Penny Kelly, who was excited about the prospect of serving the community she has loved for almost a decade.

“I have been a local in this community for about nine years, so I’m excited to serve the vast variety of patients and cases we have through these doors,” she said.

“I am very excited to build on my skills both professionally and personally, and then take those skills to an area where I am able to further educate other new grads within the years to come”

The nurses will receive clinical experience in areas including surgical and medical, palliative care, aged care, mental health, rehabilitation.

Health Service Chief Executive, Annette Scott PSM, said the future of Darling Downs Health looks bright.

“This year’s cohorts have diverse backgrounds... the one thing they all have in common is their passion for providing outstanding healthcare to regional and rural communities.”
