A bright future ahead for these five

Five students from Oakey State High School travelled to Warwick to receive an award.

The students, from Ms Jelena Edhouse’s Year 9 Agricultural Science class, recently took out first place in Australia for overall class in the Year 7-9 category in the 2025 Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Hermitage Schools Plant Science Competition.

“A massive congratulations to the winning class team- Chloe Crighton, Kaytlyn O’Connell, Jayde Thomson, Crystel Wieck and Jessica Ziebell for their winning entry in the ‘Insects in Agriculture’ Plant Science Project section,” a school spokesperson said.

Three of the students also received individual awards:

Chloe Crighton:

Winner, Queensland University of Technology Most Outstanding Poster

Runner-up, Ag Institute Australia Junior Science Achievement Award

Crystel Wieck:

Winner, Zonta Warwick STEM Award for Young Women

Kaytlyn O’Connell:

Highly Commended.

The five students were presented with medallions, prizes and certificates at a special awards ceremony in Warwick.

Over 153 schools and 4,177 students across Queensland participated in the project, meaning the awards were no small achievement!
