Avoid fines: new requirements for tyre use on silage
Farmers are urged to be aware of, and comply with, the rules and regulations in place around the use of tyres for covering silage.
Tyres are a valuable and cost-effective resource used by many dairy farmers for storing silage.
Previously, farmers had an exemption to permit the use of tyres for covering silage, however this exemption disappeared with the update of the End of Waste (EOW) Code for ‘End of Life Tyres’.
This left farmers that use and keep tyres at risk of being fined for non-compliance to the code.
QDO raised this issue with Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) and with their assistance the Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES) amended the code in February.
The code now deems tyres used for silage storage are a resource rather than a waste product.
If you use tyres to cover silage, to be code compliant, you are required to:
Notify DES that you are a resource user by completing the form, and
Keep an acquisition record.
