Given a prime time billing in front of a large Saturday night home crowd, the Bears romped it home and were a class above a Highfields side which is set to finish fourth.

The Bears will play Newtown in Clifton next weekend in what is essentially a play-off for second spot.

Coach Eddie Dean said it was an opportunity for his side to test out some set plays ahead of the finals.

“In training this week, we were trying to spread the width of the opposing team’s defence,” Dean
said.

Earlier, the men farewelled their underwhelming season with a narrow win over Highfields.

The occasion was followed by a “Rhythm for a Reason” music event to raise money for leukaemia sufferers, put on by students Sasha Lee, Jessica Lee and school captain Sharmekha Young from Oakey State High School.

Sasha and Jessica had organised the event in honour of their late grandfather Shane, who’d lost his battle with leukemia in 2020.

As of Monday, the event had raised over $1500, surpassing the $1000 target set by the students.
