 Oakey 22 d. Souths 10

Oakey Bears, finally delivered on their promising season with a good win over Souths at Trevor Mickleborough Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Kamiti Vetemotu again was tremendous for Oakey in the win whilst Letuia Eliu also was very effective.

Oakey led 12-10 at half time with no conversions by both sides.

The Bears grabbed an early second half try through Kamu Siaosi after just two minutes (16-10).

The match settled down into a real dog fight with both sides digging deep until Vetemotu put Oakey over the line with a clever four pointer to get Oakey to the eventual 22-10 full time score.

Congratulations to Oakey who deserved the win.

They have a tough draw going into the last part of the competition but opposition sides will be watching as they will be dangerous, especially at home.

Souths still competed well but dropped too much ball.

They still are the real deal this season as Oakey had to play well to beat them.

Tate McCormick and Kyle Petersen were their best.

Oakey now travels to Warwick in a tough road trip whilst Souths hosts Wattles on Saturday night in the match of the day.

Oakey 22 (Kamiti Vetemotu 2, Letuia Eliu, Kamu Siaosi tries Dylan Adamson goal) defeated Souths 10 (Luke Maiden, Ethan Hearn tries Ben Cook goal)

Women

Oakey 62 d. Souths 0

The Bears women put 60 on a dispirited Southern Suburbs outfit, who were the victims of an Oakey team fired up by last week’s Presidents Cup Final loss.

Annie Vito was the star, scoring an incredible six tries.

The side is being coached by men’s A Grade coach Herman while Eddie Dean is away in the Cook Islands

Oakey 62 (Annie Vito 6, Kylie Janes, Elaina Saluni, Mikera Young, Charymayne Pakura, Zerlina Dyer, Angelina Westcott, Bina McLoughlin tries Bina McLoughlin 3 goals) defeated Souths 0

Oakey 28 drew with
Souths 28.

Laurie Stewart said his side “should’ve got flogged” after escaping from an error-riddled performance with a draw

“I said - what beats us is us,” he said.

“We throw the ball away, we make mistakes.”

“If we just fix our mistakes up, we can score tries from anywhere on the paddock.

“One thing that was really encouraging to me was that all their tries came from close range, meaning they weren’t able to put on any midfield moves.”

Having led Newtown’s Indigenous Round efforts last year when he was coach, Laurie was pleased to see his player and proud Wakka Wakka man Damon Anderson lead the Welcome  to Country, having designed the jerseys worn by all grades.

Oakey 28 (Damon Anderson, Faletoese Faletoese, Ashley Hooper, Massey Collins-Wharton, Maluafiti Vaovasa Taima, tries Massey Collins-Wharton 2, Maluafiti Vaovasa 2 goals drew with Souths 28 (Heath Tisdell 2, Mitch Riley, Lachlan Brown, Chad Gloss tries, Pegler 4 goals).
