Better safety in school zones
Flashing School Zone Signs are being rolled out across more than 100 high-risk school zones in Queensland, including at Drayton State School.

Also in Toowoomba, St. Saviour’s Primary School and St. Saviour’s College will receive new flashing signs.
Almost $7 million has been allocated this financial year to install and maintain the signs across the State, which are proven to reduce speeding and enhance safety for children travelling to and from school.
Last year, 12,384 infringement notices were issued across Queensland for motorists speeding in 40km/h school zones, including 288 in the Darling Downs.
Tragically, more than 63 school aged children in Queensland were injured in 2024 as a result of a crashes in school zones, with around 30 of those casualties hospitalised.
The selected school zones were identified based on a comprehensive assessment of crash history, pedestrian activity, traffic volume, speed limits, visibility concerns, and feedback from school communities.
Research shows flashing school zone signs lead to a 45 per cent reduction in the number of motorists exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h, significantly improving driver behaviour during school hours.
Member for Condamine Pat Weir said the flashing school zone signs actively reminded motorists when and where to slow down, delivering real safety upgrades for children.
