Boxing after dark bringing youth together
The PCYC’s Boxing after dark classes are bringing the youth of the Oakey together in a program designed to teach discipline and teamwork.
Every second week at the Oakey Cultural Centre, young people gather to blow off some steam at the PCYC Box-out.
Box-out teaches young people from ages 12 to 24 self-defence, discipline and fitness in a safe environment on a Monday afternoon.
Participants are provided with free food and water.
Groom MP Garth Hamilton was on hand two weeks ago and was impressed by the enthusiasm shown by some of the young boxers since he was last here.
“I’ve been twice to this event, last year and this year,” he said.
“It’s a program that has had a good mix of boys and girls.
“I really like the way they’ve introduced some combinations.
“It’s great to see how some of the young people have come along since last year.”
The Federal Member said he has a lot of time for the sport of boxing.
“I grew up doing boxing training,” he said.
“It’s a sport that builds confidence, discipline and it’s one of the best forms of fitness in my opinion.
“There’s a bag down in Parliament House and I find it’s a great way to relieve stress.”
Mr Hamilton said the work of Oakey PCYC Coordinator Katarina Medland said she was looking for another worker to help with the fortnightly program.
“Oakey really has nothing for young people,” she said.
“There’s a lot kids gaming and online”
“I wish I could do more programs.
“Obviously, there’s a huge number of kids that aren’t engaged in schools that you see walking around and boxing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea!”
