Bringing history home

When Sarah and Matt Transton arrived back in Pittsworth, they didn’t just bring their little family with them, they brought pieces of Queensland’s history too.

Rather than buying new, the couple made the conscious decision to restore and re-purpose two historic homes, saving them from demolition and giving them a new life on their farm, situated on the edge of Pittsworth.

For the Transtons, sustainability isn’t a trend, it’s a value, and one they’re proud to share with the local community.

Their first home made headlines 16 months ago, travelling all the way from Wavell Heights in Brisbane under the cover of night.

Split carefully down the middle, the house arrived via two trucks in the early hours of the morning.

It was a dramatic but necessary journey to preserve it’s character and craftsmanship.

The house didn’t arrive unscathed, loosing the laundry off the back in the process.

More recently, a second home joined the property, this time from nearby Yarranlea.

Dating back to the 1800s, the house has lived many lives.

Once known as the Merritt House, it was relocated to its previous property, around
50 years ago and later used as an art studio by a local artist, adding a creative chapter to its rich history.

The second home was relocated last week by the Wassell family from Jandowae, the same family who moved Sarah’s parents’ home onto their property 25 years ago.

This marks the fifth renovation project for Sarah and Matt, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We’ve always loved old things,” Sarah said.

“There’s something really special about preserving what already exists, the craftsmanship, the stories, the soul of these homes.”

For the Transtons, bringing these houses to Pittsworth is about more than building a family home.

It’s about contributing to the town’s charm, honouring the past and proving that old homes still have so much life left to give.

Their vision is to thoughtfully join the two houses into one unique home, creating a place designed for generational living where history, family and future can coexist under one roof.

As the restorations continue, one thing is certain - these homes have found the right people, and Pittsworth has gained two beautiful pieces of living history.
