Calls for sealed road connecting Kingsthorpe and Gowrie Junction communities
A local resident is calling on Toowoomba Regional Council to seal the Kingsthorpe-Tilgonda Road after a supermarket delivery truck became the latest victim of the ‘shortcut’ between the two communities.
Rain last week saw a total of five vehicles bogged in four days according to exasperated local resident Sonya Doecke, who is regularly a source of assistance for those who become stuck outside her front door.
“I think the answer would be to actually get that road sealed as it’s the shortcut from Kingsthorpe to Gowrie and Google Maps are telling all the trucks to go down it from Kingsthorpe,” she said.
“We even had a car carrier truck and trailer almost get bogged the other day while it was carrying a car but he stopped in time and had to back up into our driveway to turn around.
“All because Google Maps told him to go down that road as he was unfamiliar with the area.
“I was talking to the previous owner and she said they’d lived here for 42 years and had people bogged continuously over that time period.
“It’s definitely an ongoing issue that Council think they’ve rectified by putting up a ‘dry weather only’ sign.
“Well, the Woolies driver didn’t even see that sign as his attention was drawn to the bigger ‘rough surface’ sign behind it.
“I’d say it’s a mix of people not seeing the sign or choosing to ignore it to try their luck in getting through with their 4WD.”
It’s understood emergency services have been called to at least one of the stuck vehicles.
Toowoomba Regional Council did not respond to comment before deadline, but it’s understood the road is not on Council’s radar at present.
Meanwhile, the Georgiou Group are continuing roadworks on 4AK Road between Oakey and Kingsthorpe.
