Local Cambooya Instrumentation apprentice Josh McKay was awarded Apprentice of the Year in the hotly contested Instrumentation Apprentice of the Year category.

Commencing with host employer Millmerran Operating Company (MOC) in 2019, 26-years-old Josh is completing three trade apprenticeships including a dual-trade Electrical and Instrumentation apprenticeships, studying both a Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control and a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, at TAFE Queensland.

“I chose a trade career because I never wanted to be out of work,” he said.

“But most importantly I wanted to get myself into a lifelong career that I was interested in.

“Out of all of the trades, I find Instrumentation both the most challenging and rewarding.

“It’s the most technically advanced and you really have to be ‘switched on’ every day at work to troubleshoot and fault find as required to keep the plant (Millmerran Power Station) operational.

“Supporting my wife and our three awesome kids on an apprenticeship wage was hard at first, not to mention the three hour round trip to work every day, but I know I’m setting up my family for a great life,” he said.

The prestigious 2023 TAFE Queensland SkillsTech CSQ Apprentice Awards were presented on 16 November at Howard Smith Wharves in Brisbane.
