Campaign underway to re-stump Kingsthorpe hall
Kingsthorpe War Memorial Hall has received $35,000 to refurbish its disability access ramp, as the committee begins a campaign to re-stump the 70-year old building.
The funding announcement comes after the launch of a community fundraising drive to save one of the few community-owned assets in the growing town.
Adding the $35,000 to donations already made, around $150,000 remains to finance the project.
There are around 803 dwellings in Kingsthorpe, and if each contributed $200 tomorrow, the project would be paid for instantly.
Donations over $1000 will forever be remembered on a memorial board, while those under this amount will still go into a book.
Fundraising Organiser Jo Muldoon says a volunteer committee made up of community members owns and runs the hall.
She explains the backstory behind the project.
“The Kingsthorpe War Memorial Hall Committee is reaching out to seek your support in preserving one of our community’s most treasured landmarks - the Kingsthorpe War Memorial Hall.
“Built by the community and officially opened on 12th May, 1956, the hall stands as a living tribute to the men and women from our region who served and sacrificed during times of conflict.
“For almost 70 years, it has also been the heart of our community - a place where generations have gathered for ANZAC services, celebrations, fundraising events, dancing, meetings, and supporting one another.
“Today, our beloved hall is in desperate need of help.
“The building is literally buckling beneath us.
“Its stumps are failing, and without urgent restoration work, we risk losing this important piece of our history and community life forever.
“To help save the hall, we have launched our ‘Donate A Stump’ Appeal, inviting individuals, families, businesses, and organisations to sponsor a stump for $1,000.
“As a lasting tribute, donors contributing $1,000 or more will be recognised on a permanent donor board displayed beside our Honour Board of Fallen Soldiers.
“Donations of any amount will also be proudly recorded in our community donation register, ensuring every act of generosity is remembered.
“We are also pleased to invite you to our official ‘Donate A Stump’ Media Launch on Friday 3rd July at 2pm at the Kingsthorpe War Memorial Hall.
“Community members, businesses, families, and supporters wishing to make a donation are warmly invited to attend and join us for afternoon tea.

The latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) saw the Queensland Government award almost $20 million in grants to over 800 community organisations across Queensland, with over 200 groups awarded the maximum grant of $35,000.
Other local recipients from Round 126 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund included the Lions Club of Highfields and North Eastern Downs who received $7,250 to install a solar system on top of their home at 30 Shostaki Road, Cabarlah.
The Cabarlah building is also used by the neighbouring Highfields Men’s Shed and other community groups.
Meanwhile, a solar system will also be installed at the home of the Toowoomba and District Woodcrafters at the Toowoomba Showgrounds in Glenvale.
The Toowoomba Woodcrafters received $18,175 for this project and to purchase equipment.
The Cecil Plains Golf Club has received $22,799 to purchase a mower and upgrade its facility which is used to host competitive inter- and intra-club golf meets, as well as recreational play.
Queensland Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said the GCBF supported the organisations and people who dedicate their time to strengthening communities across Queensland.
“These organisations are at the heart of our communities, and grant funding from the GCBF ensures they can continue to operate and deliver vital services for Queenslanders,” the Attorney-General said.
