Campdraft back at Oakey
An Open Campdraft was held at Oakey for the first time since before COVID on the weekend, drawing over 200 competitors and hundreds of spectators.
Beautiful weather greeted the competitors at the Oakey Pony Club over the weekend.
On Friday morning, hundreds of cattle supplied by Edwards Livestock and the Gamble family were mustered down Oakey Cooyar Road making for a novel sight.
Competition then began.
Attendance peaked on Saturday night when hundreds of people were catered for by Alice Edwards and her team with meat donated by the abattoir.
Planning is already underway for another Open Campdraft event in 2027.
To help secure the future of local equestrian events, a new group, the Oakey Sport and Recreation Association (OSRA) has been formed to assist with the costs of maintaining the grounds.
OSRA’s Matt Edwards said the organisation plans to build more cattleyards and improve the precinct.
“We want to run school workshops here for local kids,” he said.
