Clifton hit by unexpected deluge

Predictions of modest rain over the last few days were well exceeded by reality as the Darling Downs saw sustained rainfall, especially on Monday night.

After heavy rainfall overnight, John Weidman’s bare paddock just north of town was suitably drenched.

On Tuesday morning, Clifton had seen over 60mm of rain over the past 24 hours, the drenching a blessing for lawns, plants and trees that had seen very little rain in April and so far in May.

Elsewhere, 68mm was recorded at Clifton Airfield, 36mm at Allora, 48mm at Victoria Hill, 52mm at Pilton, 51mm at Cambooya, 56mm at Leyburn and 56mm at Warwick.

There is still some way to go to meet the May rainfall total of last year, 113mm, which included a flood.
