Clifton Landcare goes on Field Day
Clifton Landcare recently had an outing, departing the Clifton Library at 9am to their Bulloak Butterfly Habitat Reserve at Ellangowan where they listened to an interesting and thought-provoking talk by Entomologist Dr Don Sands.
He spoke of the importance of having protected areas and the multitude of very diverse eco systems relying on one another and a proposal to extend the reserve area.
Then on to the Leyburn store where we had pre- ordered our lunch choices.
We then went to Peter Ramsey’s property west of Leyburn via Karara.
At the Ramseys’ property we saw pasture cropping and planting using the Landcare planter.
We were given a tour showing how rotational grazing with goats and cattle and sequence farming can improve soil health and promote biodiversity.
Peter also explained the carbon farming project he is involved in and the use of livestock guardian dogs, virtual fencing and goat kid survival involving Queensland University.
We arrived back in Clifton at approximately 6.45pm having achieved a very inter-esting and informative day.
Thank you to Colleen Horton for navigating some of the off-track driving and ensuring us safe travels, and thanks to the Leyburn store for their excellent lunch service.\t
