Community Day brings Oakey together

Oakey Community Day saw over 400 people drop by the Federal Sporting Fields for the Four-a-side soccer tournament.

Food and refreshment tents featured a barbecue, Rosies Friends on the Street and a shaved ice van.

Volunteers from local churches and community groups manned the barbecue for several hours, handing out sausages on bread, steak sandwiches, cupcakes, zooper doopers, and water.

A refreshment stall run by the charity Rosies offered tea, coffee and Milo to passers-by.

PCYC volunteers from Toowoomba came out to assist Oakey representative Katarina Medland.

Sergeant Cam Crisp from PCYC Toowoomba said the PCYC in Oakey was exceeding expectations.

“We’re very happy that they’re here,” he said.

“We’re locked in Oakey for another couple of years thanks to New Hope Group have been very generous.”

Sgt. Crisp said it was great to see  kids in Oakey come out.

“It’s just good to see them enjoying themselves,” he said.

PCYC member Dusty, who organised the matches, said it was great to see everyone playing fair in the matches.

“Everyone’s playing in the right spirit, which is great,” he said.

The day also provided an outing for the hospital’s aged-care residents.

As with the 3-on-3 basketball last December, the Under 10s and Under 14s competitions were very well attended, with parents bringing along their entire families for a day out, although there were only a handful of participants for the Under 18s event.

The day was a huge success, and it leaves Oakey families looking forward to the next PCYC event planned for the June-July school holidays.
