Community mourns boxing legend
The sporting community is mourning the loss of Brad Smith, a local legend in the boxing ring and coach to welterweight champion Jackson “Stoneleigh” Griffiths.

After struggling with bouts of ill-health for some time, Bradley Joseph Walter Smith departed this life surrounded by his family on 17th June, aged 79 years.
Brad was an extraordinary boxing coach, and his reputation was built on unwavering dedication and a genuine passion for the sport.
Five weeks ago, it took a mighty effort for Brad to attend the biggest fight of Stoneleigh’s career.
It was the last time Brad would stand in the ring with his protégé in front of his home crowd.
"[Brad] had a heart as big as himself, and he gave it to all," said this family, in a tribute on social media.
Brad first gloved up when he was only eight years old.
Throughout his career he won 140 out of 144 fights, and claimed both state and national titles.
When he returned from his stint in the army, he took up the role of coach.
Brad loved this new profession and saw immense potential in Stoneleigh, who has since gone on to become a world champion.
For Stoneleigh, Brad was more than just his coach, he was his best mate.
Brad's son Brendon and grandson Braydon were also boxing champions.
Brendon is a world boxing coach and promoter, and stepped in to work with Stoneleigh when his father was unable.
Brad was the much loved husband of Esmay; father and father-in-law of Shane and Stacey, Tress and Josh, Brendon and Kerri.
He was adored “Pocky” of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Prayer Service for Brad will be held on Saturday, 1pm at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Hume Street, Pittsworth, followed by interment at Pittsworth Cemetery.
The ceremony will be live streamed via www.ahfunerals.com.au/upcoming-funerals/
“Join us as we celebrate a life lived large - full of laughter, love and more stories than could ever fit in a single eulogy. Bring your memories and your smiles!” the family’s social media post said.
It was no secret that Brad loved Australia, and his motto was ‘What a Great Country!’.
