The fake notes which have been detected in the region closely resemble genuine Australian currency; however, police say the counterfeit notes can be identified by the word “PROP”, printed on the note, often in small text but visible on closer inspection.

Police are urging business owners and staff to carefully check all $50 and $100 notes before accepting them and to ensure staff are trained to recognise suspicious notes.

If a suspicious note is received, members of the public are advised to contact police immediately.

Key advice for businesses:

• Train staff to remain vigilant when handling cash.

• Check all $50 and $100 notes carefully before accepting them.

• Contact your local police immediately if a suspicious note is identified.

Investigations into the origin and circulation of the false notes are ongoing.
