Danes’ semi-final hopes kept alive

Down on troops but with the prospect of keeping their semi-final hopes alive, the Danes took to the field on Sunday in a pivotal clash against fourth-placed Goondiwindi Boars.

Here’s another graduate from the Juniors making his debut for the Danes! In a pivotal home win on Sunday, Ryan Cattarin received the late call up and went on to play 75 minutes in the centres.

A Grade

With two outside backs already unavailable, Pittsworth’s task was made all the tougher when workhorse back Steward Free went down earlier making way for Ryan Cattarin to make his debut.

Ryan, along with Ethan Brose and Will Hanlon, was exceptional, displaying toughness and desperation in key moments. Pittsworth completed sets well and was the more disciplined of the two sides, taking a 10-6 lead into the sheds at half-time after spending significant periods parked on the Boars’ goal line. With a message to continue on with the same style of play, the Danes found quick points after the break through co-captains Tom O’Sullivan and Alex Kahler. Pittsworth spent another lengthy period in good ball but to the Boars’ credit, they turned the Danes away and went on the counter attack with 12 minutes remaining. Goondiwindi crossed twice in quick succession to make a game of it but ultimately David Woodbridge’s kicking game and some pivotal touches from Jordan O’Shea ensured the Danes drew nearer the top five with a crucial game to come against Souths this weekend.

Reserve Grade

A great game in the windy conditions, with the score line swapping and changing throughout the match.

Unfortunately, the Danes were 22-20 with one minute and 30 seconds to go and just couldn’t hold out the Boars’ attack. Another game that has slipped us by due to lack of effort in the back end of the match. Some great individual performances on the day by front rowers Marc Thompson and Callum Bourke. Blair Wright had his honest defence game, and Matt Butler came off the bench to help out for the day after shoulder surgery throughout the year, and earned the Players’ Player. Matty Butler - 3, Witchy - 2, Gus - 1.

Womens

The ladies took on Oakey on Sunday in a game that was sure to be a tough one. The Danes were ready to prove they are serious contenders in the competition. Our attack was electric with some individual and team tries, and excellent support play. We couldn’t be prouder of our team, their dedication to each other and the positive atmosphere they create. It is great to see them show up for one another. Danes 68-10 Oakey. Players’ Player was Sasha Blomley.

Under 19

The depleted Under 19s team lost 44-24 to the travelling Goondiwindi team on Sunday at Pittsworth. Another resilient performance from all players earning the respect of their opposition and spectators.

With no reserves and only 12 players the young Danes were competitive and made Goondiwindi work hard for their win.

With only three games left we hope to have players return to bolster our numbers and finish the season with our heads held high. Players’ Player votes went to Aidan Bourke, Will Hanlon and Ethan Brose.
