Danes sport new Indigenous jersey for NAIDOC Week
The Pittsworth Danes debuted a new Indigenous jersey on the weekend, designed by player Clay Dempsey for NAIDOC Week, as they took to the field against Brothers Leprechauns.
“Clay has done an incredible job creating another outstanding design, showcasing his talent both on and off the field,” a spokesperson for the Pittsworth Danes Rugby League said.
“We are extremely proud to wear a jersey that reflects such creativity and meaning.”
Clay’s design of the jerseys reflected the current NAIDOC theme: 50 Years of Deadly, which was a blend of culture and community.
It was a tough day for the Danes at Glenholme Park but every player gave it their all, and even if the results didn’t go their way, the effort and pride on display did not go unnoticed.
A GRADE
Pittsworth 18 - Brothers 54
The Danes started the better of the two sides over the weekend as they raced to a 14-0 lead over Brothers.
Laurie Jocumsen had a hand in two of the first three tries with great kick-chase by Will Hanlon rewarded with a pair of tries.
Tom O’Sullivan made a double play for the Danes third try, firstly forcing the turn over with heavy contact on the opposing fullback before finding the football on the following play to assist Harry Cooke in dotting down.
Brothers began to gain ascendancy in the middle stages of the first half until Clay Dempsey picked off an intercept to make the score 18-12.
Unfortunately fatigue caught up with the Danes with six players backing up for A grade after stand out games in Under 19s and Reserve Grade.
Brothers ran out winners 52-18.
Well done to AJ Lonergan, Clay Dempsey, Lachlan Thompson and Chris Sillitoe who all played their first game of A grade for this season.
Liam Short was a standout, playing 80 minutes in the middle and was well supported by Cam Millar and Zac Kahler.

RESERVE GRADE
Pittsworth 12 - Brothers 28
Coming up against a strong Brothers team on Saturday, we went down 28-12.
Although turning up to play with all the Danes players contributing well, Brothers were young, fit and proved their standing on the ladder.
We are improving and will contribute to work towards making the top five and a finals birth.
Players’ player votes went to Lachlan Thompson, Charlie Brown and Tysne Stevens.

UNDER 19
Pittsworth 12 - Brothers 32
A tough afternoon at Glenholme Park going down 32-12 to a very classy Brothers.
Brothers played a structured, disciplined brand of football and showed why they’re one of the competition’s form teams.
They completed well, controlled field position and made us pay for our mistakes.
Our boys never stopped competing and showed plenty of heart throughout the 80 minutes.
We struggled to build sustained pressure against a well-organised defensive line.
While the scoreboard wasn’t the result we were after, there are plenty of lessons to take away.
Thanks to everyone who made the trip out to support the boys.
