Several aircraft joined the effort to contain the large grass fire at the Pittsworth airfield.

Multiple Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), Rural Fire Brigade, Ambulance and water bombing aircraft battled to control a large grass fire that spread rapidly from the Pittsworth Aerodrome on Tuesday afternoon.

It is believed the blaze began in machinery near a shed at the aerodrome and spread into nearby tall, dry grass.

It led to quite dramatic scenes as the flames leapt higher and send huge plumes of dark smoke up over the skyline.

Emergency workers moved quickly to control then contain the flames and ensure a nearby horse property and sheds were out of the danger zone.

No injuries were reported.

QFES said the fire was reported at 1.17pm and was under control by 3.30pm with the last vehicles leaving the scene by 4.30.

Meanwhile, earlier the same day the Toowoomba-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew airlifted a man aged in his 60s to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, after he was critically injured in a crash involving his motorbike and a car at Southbrook.

The chopper landed on a stretch of the Gore Highway near the crash site, where the patient was treated for multiple injuries, including a head injury.
