Fire at the Dump!

Last Tuesday afternoon four fire crews battled a blaze that began as a rubbish fire and spread into neighbouring scrub at the Clifton Waste Management Facility.

The first two auxiliary firefighters on site had their work cut out for them, being dwarfed by the huge spires of smoke already rising above them.

At around 2.15pm on Tuesday 17th March, two Clifton Auxiliary firefighters were the first on scene, and it didn’t look too good.

With one mound of rubbish to the left curdling away in the flames, and another blaze ripping through grassland to the right, behind the dump, it was frantic.

One firefighter ran back and forth between his hose and the walkie talkie in his truck.

Huge plumes of smoke were rising above the dump, tongues of flame chasing the smoke into the clouds.

This one was getting out of control.

However the blaze was under control within an hour.

A loader had to be called in to help move the rubbish during the firefighting operation.

While the cause of the blaze was uncertain, fire crews were called back out the next day, Wednesday the 18th, at 6.40am, to manage a re-ignition.

However only one crew was needed that time.

The re-ignition was under control by 8.20.
