First Koala found in Oakey Koala Habitat

Several years after the Oakey Urban Landcare planted its first Koala Habitat trees, the plot of land has attracted its first koala.

The Koala Habitat was established by the Landcare Group after it was observed that the local koala population had drastically declined since the 1970s.

Dr Eric Donaldson, who recalled a time past where koalas would make noises throughout the night outside his home, set aside some of his land on the corner of Oakey-Kelvinhaugh Road and Beale Street for the cause.

Over the past seven years, Oakey Urban Landcare has planted and nurtured dozens of eucalyptus saplings to provide a safe space for the handful of local koalas that remain.

Periodically, they have been helped in this endeavour by Oakey State High School students on placement.

It’s hoped that as the trees continue to grow, more koalas will come.
