Footy back at Oakey High
Oakey State High School’s first rugby league team in many years has defeated Wilsonton and pushed Highfields to the wire this term.
Coach Mr Hearn said the team had banded together following expressions of interest from a number of male students who were interested in starting a team.
“We had a bunch of boys that were keen to play,” he said.
“We’ve got lots of boys that are new to the game.”
The star of the team is Harry Arioka, who plays for Highfields Eagles.
Harry recently travelled to Townsville with the Darling Downs team playing in the positions of centre and forward and said he’s enjoyed helping some of his team mates learn to play the game.
“I enjoy helping the young ones,” he said.
“Some of them are a year younger and they’re playing against boys in Year 10.”
The team has played weekly on Wednesdays t, and had the chance to play at the Bears football fields against Dalby State High.
While Oakey went down narrowly, the camaraderie between the players was evident, and several students came along to watch their class mates play.
It’s been a busy term for sports teams at the school, with the girls netballers playing in the Vicki Wilson Championships this month.
