Across seven weeks, seven classes competed to collect the most eligible 10-cent containers, including poppers, water bottles and soft drink cans.

Students were encouraged to collect containers at home and at school, with each classroom having its own dedicated Containers for Change bin.

The winning class collected more than 2,500 containers and were able to celebrate their efforts with a pizza party.

Natalie Roach, Chief Executive Officer of Container Exchange, the not-for-profit organisation that runs Containers for Change, said it was fantastic to see the school raise important funds while educating the next generation about sustainability.

“Drayton State School has shown that container recycling can be more than just a good habit, it can be a powerful fundraising tool for meaningful school initiatives.

“It’s inspiring to see young Queenslanders leading the charge for a cleaner, greener future. Well done to all students involved,” Ms Roach said.

The competition was proudly managed by the Student Council which was at the helm of counting and transferring the containers.

“The enthusiasm all of our students showed in being a part of this competition was great to see and the learnings that they all gained around the importance of recycling and contributing back to our community was invaluable,” Paul Wells, Principal of Drayton State School, said.

Since 2018, Queenslanders have recycled more than 11 billion containers through Containers for Change, with $1.1 billion in 10-cent refunds flowing back into their pockets.

The scheme also continues to have a strong community impact, proudly providing an avenue for charities, community groups and schools just like Drayton State School to receive meaningful donations.
