Great Success For Hendon’s Milton Park
Josh Milton’s Milton Park stud, based in Hendon, had champions across multiple categories at the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) Sheep Competition at the Pittsworth Showgrounds in October.
The competition saw two classes judged for rams and ewes, one being the Open Class with 40 entries and the other the Champion of Champions.
Milton Park went five for five with the eligible sheep they entered in the competition, with a Suffolk winning the Champion of Champions event for ewes, a white Suffolk winning the Reserve in the same category and the remaining three sheep winning the Champion of Champions Breeders Group.
Josh Milton of Milton Park said he felt pretty good about the performance of his stud.
“I was quite pleased with the stud, particularly the ewe,” Mr Milton said.
“She ended up being the Supreme Sheep of the Toowoomba Show earlier this year.”
He said he felt pleased that the ewe went so well.
“I had no expectations. Going into an event, I never expect any major accolades.”
Mr Milton said he moved to Hendon seven or eight years ago after previously being based at Clifton on the New England Highway.
As well as sheep, he is also involved in the pork industry, owning a piggery business.
Mr Milton is well known among sheep circles as he was formerly the national president of the Suffolk Sheep Society of Australia for five or so years.
Locally, he is known as chief steward of the Allora Show and for helping out with the sheep competition at the Clifton Show.
The Champion of Champions title saw the winning entries from the Allora, Inglewood, Pittsworth, Warwick, Toowoomba, Clifton and Mt Gravatt agricultural shows battle it out.
The competition is one of the richest of its kind, offering more than $3,000 in prize money.
The judge for the Champion of Champions event was Andrew Heron - President of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Stud Breeders Association.
The rams that were eligible for the competition were Texel from the Hood Family Plainview, Suffolk from Josh Milton, Milton Park, Dorset Horn from Lyndon Frey Silverdale, Poll Dorset from Chris Ruby Sovereign, and Dorpa from Livingstone Christian College.
The winning Champion of Champions Ram was the Poll Dorset exhibited by Chris Ruby Sovereign, and the Reserve was the Texel Ram from the Hood Family Plainview.
Mr Milton said as the venue for the competition, the Pittsworth Showgrounds was “quite good actually.”
“The competition had to took place somewhere.
“It’s the ideal venue because its close to where eligible people are from,” he said.
