Healthy Kitchens at Emu Creek State School

This semester, Emu Creek State School has been partnering with the QCWA Country Kitchen Program to teach our students the basics of healthy cooking.

The school had this to say about it:

We have been able to access this program through a Pick of the Crop grant, which aims to support Queensland state schools to boost students’ consumption of vegetables and fruit through locally agreed actions.

At the end of each session, our students receive a pack with their CWA apron, tasty recipes and some tips to help them eat more fruit and vegetables.

On Thursday 14th March, our Prep and Year 1 students worked with Lucinda (Pick of the Crop), Naomi, Margaret and Ros (QCWA Country Kitchens) to create mini muffin pizzas, bean brownies and dragon fruit smoothies.

Our students were involved in cooking, learning about healthy lunchboxes and most importantly, taste testing their creations.

Dragon fruit was a fruit that many students had not seen or tasted before, but the dragon fruit smoothie was a delight for everyone’s taste buds!

On Thursday 21st March, our Year 2 and Year 3 students worked with the QCWA Country Kitchen Team to create rice paper rolls, sticky date and pear muffins and infused water.

They also learned about the amount of sugar in different foods - and the sugar content in some foods, like tomato sauce, was a big (or hidden) surprise!

They enjoyed eating their creations for lunch, and the infused water, using raspberries, pears and flavoured fruit tea, was a big hit, as were the rice paper rolls.

Throughout Term 2, our year 4, 5 and 6 students will be participating in several workshops and learning to create healthy meals.

A huge thanks to the QCWA Country Kitchen Team, and Pick of the Crop, for helping to deliver this program.
