Highway finally gets some attention
Work to improve the condition of the New England Highway south of Allora is expected to continue into next year.
The major work is due to start this month and continue until November, weather permitting.
A final seal is expected to be undertaken on March 2026.
The stretch of highway, more than four kilometres long, from Darling Street at Allora to Hancock Lane at Mount Marshall, has drawn considerable criticism from locals and travelling motorists for some time as the surface continued to deteriorate.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads says the rehabilitation work to be undertaken will improve road safety and provide “a better driving experience”.
The project involves upgrading the existing road pavement to improve road strength and durability and extend the road’s life span.
The work will be carried out during daylight hours Monday to Friday and will result in disruption to property access as well as lane closures, short delays and 40 kilometres an hour speed limits.
The New England Highway project will coincide with the project to create a new roundabout at the Warwick and Forde Streets intersection in Allora.
As Forde Street forms part of an alternate route between the Highway and Warwick, local police believe it is likely that there will be more traffic through Allora.
“Given the two projects will be running over pretty much the same period, it will no doubt affect our local residents and businesses and I expect will see a large amount of traffic detouring through town itself and making our streets busier,” Allora Officer-In-Charge Sergeant Damian Grace said.
Work on the new roundabout is due to start this month and continue until December.
