Hospital welcomes first cuddle bed
Oakey Hospital says it is bringing comfort and connection to end of life care after receiving its first cuddle bed, made possible through the compassionate work of The Belinda McGowan Foundation.

Funded by New Acland Coal’s Community Investment Fund and delivered by the Belinda McGowan Foundation, the double-sized cuddle bed, which has a weight capacity of 800kg, is designed to allow loved ones to lie side-by-side, enabling dignity and togetherness for patients in palliative care.
Darling Downs Health Services Chief Executive, Annette Scott PSM said the cuddle bed represents a step forward in compassionate care for the region.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring that healthcare is not only about treatment, but about humanity,” Ms Scott said.
“By bringing families closer together at such an important time, we strengthen the bonds of community and uphold the dignity every person deserves.”
Darling Downs Health Director of Nursing, Matt Boyd said the cuddle bed is a gift from the community to the community, ensuring families in Oakey can share comfort and love when it matters most.
“Being able to give our residents and patients the comfort of connection in their final days is truly special, and we believe this closeness is a fundamental human right,” Mr Boyd said.
“I always look for a moment of beauty during challenging times and The Belinda McGowan Foundation is a shining example.
“The Foundation was born from Belinda’s experience, advocating for closeness through her end-of-life journey, and now many others can experience that comfort with loved ones during this time.
“We’re extremely thankful for the Foundation and the generosity of New Acland Coal for funding the first bed for our facility.”
The initiative is part of a growing movement led by the Belinda McGowan Foundation, which was born at Warwick Hospital.
Inspired by the final days of Flight Lieutenant Belinda McGowan, RAAF, who longed for closer connection with her loved ones, the Foundation has transformed her vision into a legacy of love and care.
For Bruce McGowan, Founder of The Belinda McGowan Foundation, and Belinda’s husband, the gift of a cuddle bed is not simply about equipment.
“This bed is more than just furniture – it’s a commitment to ensuring no one goes through end-of-life care alone,” Mr McGowan said.
“(To Matt), I commend your foresight and desire to expand your facility.”
New Acland Coal’s donation, covering the costs of a single bed, means that other fundraising efforts, such as the Bernborough Tavern’s recent Show and Shine, will go towards bringing a second bed to Oakey, which is expected to arrive early next year.
