The winner from the South West Queensland race will then go to the World title race in Anaheim, California in September.

Oakey State High School’s two teams will compete with 16 other racing teams from as far as Kilcoy and the Gold Coast.

At Oakey State High School, the students nominate to be in the Hydrogen class at the end of term 2 in Year 9.

This class then is taught about how batteries and hydrogen fuel work in Year 9 Chemistry and investigate different renewable energies and electric circuits in the Year 9 Physics Unit.

Then in the Year 10 Physics unit in term 1, they learn about forces and Newton’s three laws of motion and apply their knowledge to modify their race car, ready for racing in term 2 and for their assessment in Year 10 Physics.

The Year 11 team works on Tuesday and Friday lunch times and period 4 on Friday.

When choosing the racing team members, we look for students who work well in a team environment, with good communication and problem solving skills - all excellent attributes for the future when they join the work force.

Both teams need a designer who can work in the Autodesk environment and a driver or two who can weave around other drivers, not hitting other cars, but still moderate the speed of their car so there is efficient use of Hydrogen.

On Tuesday the 12th of March the members of both teams were announced.

In the Senior team – Oakey Falcons we have Ethan Altadonna, Kyan Hann, Makaela Henderson, Aiden Hine, Brianna Keen, and Amy Turner.

In the Junior team – Oakey Yahdhs (indigenous name for nighthawks) we have Holly Henderson, Sonny McCormack, Ashley Panzram, Angerline Paterson, Caitlin Thomas and Benjamin Young. Congratulations to all students for making the two race teams.
