Is Australia’s best teacher right here?

Two teachers from Kulpi State School who share a Prep to Year 2 class, and one from Oakey State School have been nominated for a National Best Teachers competition.

Carly Kummerow (Kulpi State School), Haylea Chalker (Oakey State School) and Meeghan Anderson (Kulpi State School) all received nominations.
Carly Kummerow (Kulpi State School), Haylea Chalker (Oakey State School) and Meeghan Anderson (Kulpi State School) all received nominations.

The Australia’s Best Teachers advocacy series gained national attention last year when Federal Education Minister Jason Clare announced a $10 million commitment to elevate the status of teachers.

None of the local teachers or principals know who nominated them.

Oakey State School Principal Scott Pacey said that Haylea has been a hard-working and dedicated teacher during her eight years at Oakey.

“She is extremely hard working and always puts her students first,” Mr Pacey said.

“Haylea continually develops her teaching skills and is very self-motivated to do so.

“Haylea is a fantastic team member who is always willing to share her ideas
and practice with fellow teachers.

“It is an absolute pleasure to have Haylea as a part of our highly dedicated team at Oakey State School.”

Ms Chalker said that having been at Oakey since graduation, it wouldn’t be fair to claim all the credit for the award.

“I feel like it should be dedicated to some of the teachers and teacher aides that have supported me as well,” she said.

“I would not be where I am without the support of my amazing colleagues.”

Fellow nominee and Oakey resident Meeghan Anderson works at Kulpi State School, where she is a much-loved member of the community.

Kulpi State School Principal Ms Tammy Doudle said that Meeghan brought an uplifting presence to the school community.

“Ms Anderson is an exceptional teacher at our school who brings energy and enthusiasm to her classroom," she said.

“Her fun and engaging teaching style makes learning an adventure, and her positive attitude is contagious.

“Ms Anderson is not just a teacher but a caring and kind mentor who always has time for her students.

“Her commitment and dedication are evident in the inspiring ways she encourages her students to reach their full potential.

“With Ms Anderson, school is not just about education; it’s about growing and thriving together.”

Meeghan said being nominated was a great feeling.

“I haven’t worked in a small school before,” she said.

“It’s just beautiful.

“You don’t look for rewards.

“So when something like this happens, it’s extra special.

A late addition to the awards was Meeghan’s teaching partner Ms Carly Kummerow of Bowenvillle!

Ms Kummerow who teaches Monday and Tuesday, shares a Prep to Year 2 class with Meeghan, who teaches Wednesday to Friday.

The Champion took the time to catch up with Carly Kummerow.

“I teach Prep to Year 2 two days a week,” she said.

‘Last Monday, they asked for my photo to be sent to the  newspaper in Brisbane.”

“I told the kids they must be excellent kids to have two teachers nominated.”

The two teachers have both been at Kulpi for just over a year.
