Landcare gives away 3000 trees
On Tuesday 26th April, Pittsworth Landcare completed the distribution of almost 3000 seedling trees to 55 landholders, with koala food species the main focus.
A total of 2280 trees were supplied by Mole Station Native Nursery near Tenterfield and 600 from the Crows Nest Community Nursery, which is supported by Toowoomba Regional Council.
With each tubestock seedling, landholders were given a corflute tree guard, stake and mulch mat.
Last week’s distribution represented the culmination of Corridors for Koalas, Pittsworth Landcare’s three-year project which in 2018 won $38,000 funding support from the Queensland Government’s Community Sustainability Action Grants program.
Despite the dry conditions of 2019 and 2020, the Landcare group has well and truly surpassed its commitment to plant 6000 trees on 80 properties, with 7360 trees given to
101 landholders since April 2019.
In total, 17,200 trees have been distributed to landholders in the eight years since the group began its series of koala habitat revegetation projects in 2013.
Pittsworth Landcare secretary Lana Bradshaw thanked the landholders for their interest and commitment and the Raff Group for allowing the use of its Pittsworth yard for deliveries and, in earlier years, distributions.
“Koalas need our support if future generations are going to be able to see them in the wild in our local area,” she said.
Pittsworth Landcare is currently preparing a submission to the state Co-ordinator General highlighting the devastating impacts the proposed Inland Rail line is likely to have on the local koala population.
