Federal Member for Maranoa, David Littleproud resigned as Nationals Leader last week, saying he couldn’t do both.

Speaking to media on Tuesday afternoon, next to his wife Amelia, Mr Littleproud told those assembled, “I’ve gotten to a juncture where I think that it’s time,” announcing that he was resigning as Nationals Leader.

After telling the media that he was happy with the Liberal-National leadership under Angus Taylor, he went on to say in a statement that the Nationals needed “fresh-leadership.”

“The Leader must be able to give everything they have, but after the last few months, I have come to realise that I no longer have the energy required to do this job to the best of my ability,” Mr. Littleproud said.

The move came afterfour years in the leadership, four different Liberal leaders, and two splits from the Coalition.

Mr Littleproud has steered the Nationals through one of the most turbulent political moments in its history, not to mention the 2024 election, in which while the Nationals didn’t lose any seats.

Mr Littleproud admitted he didn’t sleep for days after the electoral disaster for the LNP.

“So I’m proud but I’m tired,” he said.

Mr Littleproud will stay on as MP for Maranoa, which he has safely held for the LNP with about 70 per cent of the preferential vote.

“Equal to my love of the party, is my love for the people of Maranoa and I am dedicated to continuing to keep fighting for them every day,” he said.

In the press conference, Mr Littleproud described how much he loved representing Maranoa, and how he couldn’t continue as Nationals leader.

“David has been a strong and principled advocate for regional Australia throughout his time in Parliament,” Garth Hamilton said in a statement. Liberal MP for Groom, Garth Hamilton’s electorate shares a border with Mr Littleproud,

“As Leader of the Nationals, he consistently fought to ensure that the voices of farmers, small businesses and regional communities were heard in Canberra,” Mr Hamilton said.

“I look forward to spending more time back in Queensland,” Mr. Littleproud said.

Matt Canavan was last week elected Nationals leader.
