Major expansion of piggery approved
Toowoomba Regional Council has approved plans for a major expansion of Cefn Pty Ltd’s Kyles Piggery off the Toowoomba-Karara Road at Ellangowan.
Kyles is one of several sites operated in the Ellangowan area by Cefn, which is among the most progressive business under-takings on the Darling Downs.
The application for the expansion project at Kyles Piggery was lodged at the end of 2021.
Last week’s approval will mean the capacity of the facility will more than double.
The original Kyles piggery is a farrow-to-finish facility with an approved capacity of 7,000 SPU (Standard Pig Units) and
a current operational capacity of approximately 4,770 SPU.
The new development will result in the expansion of the piggery to a total capacity of 13,800 SPU through the addition of a 2,500-sow breeder unit with pigs housed across seven sheds.
The application indicated that approximately 175 finishers are transported from the existing piggery per week.
With the expansion, an additional 1,200 weaners will be transported from the site on a weekly basis.
Four submissions relating to the application were received from local landholders, three of which were declared to be “properly made”.
They raised the issues of odour, the impact on ground water levels and noise.
Approval for the expansion addressed a number of issues including air quality, outdoor lighting impact, irrigation of effluent wastewater, the impact on the surrounding environment and liveability, existing development, underground water levels, odour and noise.
Council’s approval states that the development was assessed against all of the assessment benchmarks and complies with all of these without exception.
The site is on the eastern side of the Toowoomba-Karara Road, with the proposed development more than 400 metres to the east of the road corridor.
