Making the most of it
Although conditions were far from ideal and no horses made it out of the gates, a crowd reported to be around 1,100 still made it to the Clifton racecourse and enjoyed the day as much as they could.
With the track remaining unused, the biggest live attraction on the day was Fashions in the Field.
There were plenty of entries across the seven categories which saw familiar faces don the sash alongside some not as familiar.
The bookmakers area was buzzing with activity as instead of the Clifton Cup, punters turned their attention toward races in Brisbane and Sydney and of course, the Cox Plate.
As the day went on, grass around the grounds quickly turned to mud and those who opted for their older and less valued clothing did not regret their decision.
Clifton Jockey Club secretary Margaret Cross said considering the lack of horse racing and miserable conditions, the attendance numbers were fantastic.
“We were really overwhelmed with the turnout on the day,” Mrs Cross said.
It will be a relatively short turnaround at the Clifton Recreation Reserve, as the Clifton Rodeo is just over a week away, taking place next Friday from 6pm.
There will be an open bull ride, saddle ride, bareback ride, barrel race, novice bull ride and juniors age categories competitions.
