MCPI raises alarm over dangerous Gore Highway ‘S’ bend
Millmerran Commerce and Progress Inc. (MCPI) is calling on the Queensland Government to urgently address the dangerous ‘S’ bend on the Gore Highway, five kilometres east of Millmerran, before a serious tragedy occurs.
MCPI has written to the Department of Transport and Main Roads following ongoing community concerns about the section of road, which has been the site of multiple heavy vehicle incidents over many years.
MCPI President Nikki Macqueen said recent events have highlighted the growing safety risks.
“For years, residents, transport operators, emergency services and regular road users have raised concerns about this stretch of highway,” Ms Macqueen said.
The latest incident involved a grain truck rollover during wet weather, forcing traffic onto local roads including the Millmerran–Cecil Plains Road, Bostock Road and Lemontree Road.
Several heavy vehicles became bogged on roads not designed for sustained freight traffic.
“The incident highlighted how vulnerable the region’s transport network becomes when the Gore Highway is closed,” Ms Macqueen said.
MCPI said increasing freight volumes, combined with future renewable energy projects expected to bring more oversized and heavy vehicle movements, are placing pressure on infrastructure no longer fit for purpose.
The organisation believes straightening and upgrading the ‘S’ bend would improve safety, reduce accidents and strengthen freight efficiency across the region.
MCPI is also seeking support from Toowoomba Regional Council and local representatives to keep the issue a priority with the Queensland Government.
“This is not simply a Millmerran issue.
“The Gore Highway is a critical freight corridor for Queensland and interstate transport,” Ms Macqueen said.
“Nobody wants to see a serious injury or fatality before action is taken.”
