Mia debuts for Qld in School Sport Championships

Between 28th and 30th July, Mia Scurr from Millmerran represented Queensland in the School Sport Australia Bowls Championships at Moreton Bay.

Australia’s youngest bowling superstars converged on Club Pine Rivers for the event which made its return as part of the School Sport Australia Games.

Five states and 50 players battled it out on the green.

Mia made her debut for Queensland alongside Levi Rice (Club Helensvale), Jacob Hoger (Boyne Tannum) and Ben Hagan (Club Pine Rivers).

The Queensland School Girls Team comprised:

  • Singles - Tilah Mason (The Albert);

  • Pairs - Phoebie Russell (Burnett), Tilah Mason;

  • Triples - Makayla Gainsford (Glasshouse Country), Mia Scurr and Logan Hughes (Solander Lake); and

  • Fours - Makayla Gainsford, Mia Scurr, Phoebie Russell, Logan Hughes.

The Queensland School Boys Team comprised:

  • Singles - Jacob Hoger;

  • Pairs - Jacob Hoger, Rhys Gillman (Marlin Coast);

  • Triples - Cooper Sutton (Pialba), Ben Hagan, Levi Rice; and

  • Fours - Cooper Sutton, Ben Hagan, Levi Rice, Rhys Gillman.

The finals were contested on Wednesday, 30th July with Queensland claiming the national title in the Boys Fours competition, in a tense final against Victoria.

Tilah Mason came from the clouds in her singles play-off, earning bronze in dramatic fashion.

Trailing 10–20, she staged a sensational comeback to close the gap to 17–20 with just one end remaining.

Overall, Victoria won the team gold, followed by New South Wales, and Queensland claimed the bronze.

Mia said the experience was incredible and she would love to return to the Championships next year.

The School Sport Australia Games feature various sports including rugby league, Aussie rules,  softball, swimming, diving, hockey, netball, basketball, track and field.
