Minister seeks feedback on road corridor

Transport Minister Mark Bailey has asked those affected by the proposed Toowoomba North-South Transport Corridor to provide feedback.

“The best way for people to have their say is directly from them to us whether that’s via email, or sitting down without people and having a chat,” Mr Bailey said.

“Not everyone wants to stand up and speak in front of 250 people.”

Mr Bailey said he believed the community was given an “adequate” opportunity to express its concerns, noting the time frame for feedback was twice extended.

“That’s really important that people understand things and that we get a full snapshot of community sentiment in terms of the proposal,” he said.

“I think we will absolutely give people the opportunity to have their say and we will be considering all their submissions.”

“I’m considering a lot of the submissions already and we will certainly let the community know what our response will be once that consultation phase is over.”

Condamine MP Pat Weir has been actively involved with town meetings about the transport corridor held between Department of Transport and Main Roads spokespeople and locals over the past few months.

Mr Weir said he has had discussions with the Transport Minister over the issue during his visit to Toowoomba last week.

“I only got short notice that I was going to meet with him in Toowoomba,” he said.

“Some of the people who have been most active in the campaign were not met with which we’re disappointed to hear.

“I don’t know exactly who he did meet as he wouldn’t share the details, but I know some people were disappointed to miss out.”

“I know he met with Council which was important given the concerns raised by traditional owners.

“He indicated to me that he would make his final decision (on the direction of the corridor) later in the year.

“If nothing changes, it’ll show that it was merely a box-ticking exercise.

“The ball’s in his court.”

Feedback on the proposed Toowoomba North-South Transport Corridor closes on October 13, 2023.
