More kids, more traffic prompts community action at Cecil Plains
The combination of a growing number of children and an increased amount of traffic has prompted the Cecil Plains community to improve safety at a popular local park.
The park is located on Taylor Street, a main traffic thoroughfare and because it features a kids playground, locals have been concerned about the growing potential for a serious accident.
Jason Porter from Cecil Plains Progress said the group has been working with Toowoomba Regional Council to plan improved safety for the park.
At this time TRC has no funds allocated and as the Progress Group was unsuccessful in seeking a grant, the community has taken to crowd funding in the hope of raising $25,000 to upgrade the park, including fully fencing the play area.
Mr Porter said the funding drive is proving to be successful and is getting close to the goal.
Businesses as well as individuals have made contributions.
Cecil Plains has seen something of a boom recently with businesses experiencing growth, which has led to more activity, including on the roads.
At the same time, there has been a boost in the number of babies being born - Covid babies Jason Porter calls them.
While the growth in both business and baby numbers is great for the town, the mix isn’t a good one unless safety measures are taken.
Mr Porter said Cecil Plains Progress decided that the best thing to do would be to fence the playground to greatly minimise the risk.
