New chapter for Allora Library
The new Allora Library was officially opened last Thursday, with Southern Downs Region councillors and state members in attendance.
The new library is part of the greater Allora Community Precinct project, which has seen the Allora Library move into the old Allora Senior Citizens Centre and the Allora Regional Sports Museum moved into the building where the library used to be.
Speaking in the library last Thursday, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, who is also the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, said the $770,000 project saw $600,000 in funding through the Works for Queensland program, with the remainder coming from Southern Downs Regional Council.
The project created 16 local jobs during construction and is expected to create a further 12 operational jobs.
The Works for Queensland program is receiving $200 million over two years from 2027–28 to make it permanent and $100 million each year ongoing to support jobs and infrastructure in regional communities.
Member for Southern Downs James Lister said the Allora Precinct would become a hub for the local community and improve the town’s liveability.
Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Melissa Hamilton said spaces such as the new Allora Library allow the community to come together, connect and inspire great ideas.
While in the Southern Downs, Mr Bleijie visited other towns including Killarney and noted many locals had shared with him their displeasure at the current state of many roads, among other issues.
He said he would be discussing these isssue with the Transport and Main Roads Minister upon his return to Brisbane.
