The Senior ‘Yahdhs’ team did not go away empty-handed winning the Promo award for best presentation of the vehicle to the judges.

Supervising teacher from Oakey State High School Ms Jelena Edhouse said that Oakey’s teams were going well until they ran out of fuel late in the piece.

Oakey students were in good spirits after an exciting day out, and did not seem too downcast at missing out on a trip to the World Championships, to be held in Germany later this year.

Race director Kieren Curry praised the teams for their tenacity.

“Every race produces something different,” he said.

“My message to all teams is practice your driving - start now, even if it’s just for one week next term”

In the main stock category, Kingaroy’s 3SERT car made it through the most laps on the temporary track, which was laid inside Wilsonton State High School’s hall.

In the hybrid vehicle category, St. Aloysius College from Sydney provided the only two entries, booking themselves a ticket to the World Championships.

Race director Curry announced that the best all-girls team would also be going to Germany as part of the Girls in STEM category, an initiative to boost women’s participation in the fields of science technology, engineering, and mathematics at university.

This place was awarded to Team 4 H2 Fxlcon from Fairholme College, who came second.
