Oakey Local Ambulance Committee needs you

Oakey’s Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) held its Annual General Meeting last month with a recognition that the group needs more members to maintain a purely local presence, or it will have to merge under the Highfields LAC umbrella.

Advance Care paramedics Nicholas Faulkner and Keith Hafsteins, Toowoomba Regional Council Community Development Officer (West) Karen Suhl, Cath Wright (LAC Secretary), Jenni Timperley (LAC Treasurer), Kathy Lange (LAC Vice President), Geoff Kapernick (LAC President) and Peter Barron (Acting Officer-in-Charge, Oakey Ambulance Station)

LACs began funding the local ambulance stations and these days act as a conduit between Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics and the community, in a relationship similar to that between local police and Neighbourhood Watch.

Continuing President Geoff Kapernick said the Committee is urgently seeking assistance from the Oakey Community as the committee is down to four active members, who are again filling the roles of President, Vice President Kathy Lange, Secretary Cath Wright and Treasurer Jenni Timperley.

“I believe that the role of our committee is a very important one in that it is a communication link between our hard-working Paramedics and our community,” Mr Kapernick said.

“If a community member has a question regarding the role or function of our modern-day Paramedics or how to access their professional support, they can approach a member of our committee, who if they cannot directly answer the query, they have direct access to the Station Officer in Charge or if necessary, the Regional Management team.

“The Committee is also active in the Community with our next outing at the Santa Fair on Saturday 6 December 2025.

“We are also planning to run a CPR  and AED (Automated Electronic Defibrillator) awareness morning early in the new year.  It is true that in the event of a life-threatening emergency, the actions of a bystander can make a life saving difference before the arrival of our professional Paramedics and this is what we hope to create an awareness of during this session.”

“This morning Awareness session is a perfect time to speak with a member of our committee about the role of your Local Ambulance Committee and the part that you can play in making our Oakey Community healthier place for all.

“Looking forward to catching up at Santa Fair.

“Come and say hello.”
