Out of Bounds: Local band plays fundraiser for Year 12 formal

The band Out of Bounds, made up of teachers from Clifton State High School, rocked out at O’Shanley’s on Friday, putting on an electric rock and roll performance for a packed beer garden audience.

The four piece band looked as comfortable up on stage as a teacher in front of a whiteboard.

Over much of Friday night they jammed out for patrons of O’Shanley’s Irish Pub.

Rolling out the hits and the classics the crowd stayed and even formed what seemed to be the beginnings of a mosh.

However, no wall of death eventuated.

Nonetheless the gig was an absolute treat.

Young and old gathered to put in for the fundraiser and enjoy some well played tunes.

Students were stoked to see their teachers up their rocking out.

Mostly it brought a bit of excitement and life to the East side of the tracks.

Indeed even on the West, the music could be heard, blaring out through the night sky.

You could have been forgiven for thinking someone was rocking out next door if you were standing on King Street while the music was on.

Playing classic rock from the 80s, 90s and 2000s, there was something for everyone, except maybe fervent fans of classical music.

This is the first year the fundraiser has been held with O’Shanley’s with Out of Bounds donating their time to raise funds toward this year’s formal.

The fundraiser was organised Year 12 coordinators Celeste White, and band members Alex Calligan and Brad Hutchinson who have been year level coordinators with this current grade 12 cohort since they were in grade 7.

“It’s just wonderful to get that community support from O’Shanley’s,”  Ms White said.

Aside from hosting and raising funds for the formal, O’Shanley’s has also dedicated its coveted meat tray earnings to the school‘s formal cause.

The fundraising for the formal isn’t to make sure it’s on or particularly flashy, Ms White told The Clifton Courier.

The fundraising is so that the tickets for the event are affordable.

So that ultimately, the formal is accessible to the community that, as Ms White puts it: “It takes a village to get these kids through grade 12.”

“We want to celebrate that important experience of graduating,” she said.

It’s an important experience, graduating.

The work that Celeste, Alex and Brad have put in, alongside their band mates and the crew at O’Shanley’s is an example of what Ms White means.

A community coming together, giving what they have, whether it be the venue, the music, the rock and roll or the drinks.

On Friday night it was for the grade 12 students currently nutting their way through the final few months of high school.

Whether or not they go onto university, apprenticeships, gap years or back on the farm, this year will be an incredibly formative one for every one of them.

It’s something special to Clifton, the community.

Every one of these students will get the chance to step into it and give back.

These chances will come and go over their lifetimes.

But you would hope at one point on their journeys they’ll be able to look back at their hometown and be thankful for their neighbours, their coaches, their teachers, teacher aides, the IT and admin.

All the people in the community who have made it what it is for them.

Hopefully they’ll look back on the efforts others have made on their behalf, to create the community they know.

Hopefully it’ll be these efforts that inspire the next generations of youngsters to give back and keep
the Clifton community thriving.
