Pacific Seeds: Summer Forage and Corn Field Day at the Mengel’s
On Friday, producers were invited along to Pacific Seeds’ 2026 Summer Forage and Corn Field Day hosted by the Mengels at their Nobby property.
Melvin Mengel was happy with his Sorghum yields.
At 7 tonne an acre it wasn’t anything to write home about, but it’d do.
Melvin had bales of his sorghum rolled and wrapped and on display for the 2026 Summer Forage and Corn Field Day.
It wasn’t too windy, and the corn sitting row by row, next to the set up for the day, was looking ripe and ready for harvest.
Local producers, stake-holders like IOR, Rabobank, Horizon Commodities and Pursehouse Rural came together to get updates on summer forage options, trial outcomes, and agronomy.
Yields from each particular seed was discussed by producers who use them.
Guests from BossRural got the chance to discuss their bio fertiliser.
Pacific Seeds Territory Manager Bill Smith and Melvin Mengel invited each speaker up, to talk to the packed crowd seated on the edge of one of the Mengel’s paddocks, suitably a corn field, given that Melvin discussed how his family has been growing corn for over four generations.
While seats sunk into the black soil, the attention was on each of the speakers.
Sorghum and wheat prices and short term outlooks were discussed by a Jaco Van Der Merwe from Horizon Commodities.
Jaco discussed sorghum and wheat prices and what developments in Chinese and US markets will mean for producers in Australia.
There was also a eye-catching collection of Massey-Ferguson tractors out on display.
Rabobank employees put on a stellar barbecue, which everyone enjoyed once the speeches were done.
The day was a great chance for producers to see what was on offer from the spread of summer crops.
While lunch was being eaten, it also looked like, what was for some, a great chance to come and catch up with some mates.
