The Clifton community is mourning the passing of Howard Ebneter, one of the early pioneers of peanut growing and processing on the Darling Downs.

Howard’s journey began in 1961 when he worked as a teller at the National Australia Bank in Nobby.

During this time, his father-in-law, Ernie Beutel, recognised the potential of the rich red soil east of Clifton for peanut farming.

In 1966, Howard made the bold decision to leave banking and go into partnership with his brother-in-law, Trevor Beutel, who had just finished school.

Together, they established Clifton Farming Co., and over the next five years, they worked to understand and refine the best methods for peanut cultivation.

In 1971, Howard and Trevor took the next step by establishing a peanut processing factory in Clifton to grade and shell their crops.

Their operation supplied peanuts to major Australian companies including Sanitarium, Dick Smith, Kraft, and Mars, among others.

The factory ran successfully for 47 years and became an important employer in the region, with more than 240 people working there over the decades.

In 1991, Howard further expanded his involvement in the industry, partnering with Crumptons Kingaroy to establish a blanching and roasting facility.

The Clifton factory eventually closed its doors in 2017, following the retirement of both Howard and Trevor.

Beyond farming, Howard was deeply involved in the Clifton community.

He served many years on the Hospital and Ambulance Boards, held executive roles in the pre-school, primary, and high school P&Cs at the same time, and was an active member of the Jaycees.

Howard was also known for his debating skills, his passion for pistol shooting, and his long-time commitment to the Lutheran Church Clifton, where he held several leadership positions.

Adventurous by nature, Howard once took up solo parachuting, until an unfortunate landing in a pumpkin patch resulted in a broken ankle.

He also travelled abroad, including an unforgettable motorcycle and sidecar journey through parts of China and Tibet.

After retirement, Howard settled at Bribie Island, where he enjoyed fishing, model yacht sailing, card playing, and travelling.

Howard passed away on 27 October, and will be laid to rest at 9.30am on 12 November at Burstows, Toowoomba.

His contribution to agriculture and the Clifton community will be remembered with gratitude and pride.
